Competency Checks
Teams
will conduct a number of relatively straight forward competency checks
to demonstrate specific safety aspects of the disciplines. This is important
for your safety and the safety of other teams and officials on the course.
These checks are compulsory and will be conducted the day before the start.
The detailed program for these checks will be given to team captains at
race registration.
Failure to complete any of the competency checks within a reasonable
time frame may result in disqualification, or at best significantly reduced
participation in the event (i.e. not being permitted to conduct certain
parts of the race).
The competency checks will involve demonstration of the following:
Kayak
- Ability to escape craft once it has capsized (wet exit).
- Ability to conduct a deep water rescue (i.e. right / empty craft in
deep water, get back in and keep paddling - within a reasonable time
frame.)
- Swim 100m of any stroke.
 Navigation
- Orientate a map.
- Identify a number of grid references on the map.
- Take a bearing between two points on a map.
- Accounting for magnetic variation, calculate a bearing to walk on.
- Estimate a distance of 100m on the ground using paces.
- Describe what your team would do if it were lost.
